SME teams are changing shape. Getting smaller is only one part of it. As the day-to-day work of running a business moves to automated systems, the people who remain spend more time on decision-making, and less time on doing the work itself.
Who is on the team is changing: the shift is measurable. Startups built around automation are, on average, 25 percent smaller than similar companies built the traditional way. They have 13 percent more engineers and 15 percent fewer people in entry-level and management roles. The kind of people on the team changes before the size of the team does.
Our take: the usual explanation for a smaller team is cost. Automation is cheaper than people, so fewer people get hired. That explanation is partly right. We see it differently. As the everyday work moves to automated systems, the people who remain are the ones making the decisions: what to build, whether the results hold up, and who is responsible when something goes wrong. A small team is not doing less work. It is carrying more responsibility per person.
Where this becomes a risk: decision-making does not spread evenly across a smaller team on its own. It piles up on whoever set the system running, whether or not that person has the right expertise or enough time for the role. A team can look complete on paper and still depend entirely on one person’s decision-making.
The question SMEs need to answer: which roles need someone responsible for the outcome, and whether that person knows enough to catch mistakes the system will not flag on its own. A hybrid workforce, part human and part automated, only works when that split is deliberate. It breaks down once headcount is treated as just a number, rather than a set of jobs that still require decision-making.
What we expect next: designing the team, not just picking tools, will be the main question for SMEs over the next few years. The businesses that get ahead of it will decide on purpose who carries decision-making, who carries execution, and how the two stay connected as that mix keeps changing.
A smaller team can still build a lot. The quality of its decisions is still limited to what its people can provide. That is the difference we think most SMEs will need to design their team around.
